New Year’s Day in Japan

Oshougatsu (お正月): With the end of the year drawing closer, we’d like to introduce you to some Japanese customs practiced just before, on, and after New Year’s Day, along with our teas for the holidays.

To prepare for Oshougatsu, we usually undertake a major cleaning of our homes. This end-of-the-year housecleaning, called "Susuharai" (すす払い), should be completed by Dec. 29. After this, we decorate the front door of our homes with a special ornament called an "Okazari"(お饰り), which features various foods symbolizing good luck, such as dried squid, dried seaweed, and tangerines. We also display "Kagami-mochi"(镜饼)—mirror-shaped rice cakes made from rice paste.

kagami-mochi

Used as an ornament to top off New Year’s "Kagami-mochi"(镜饼), wishing for a long life of health and happiness, the Mikan is one of the most popular winter citrus fruits in Japan.

Mikan Green Tea (low caffeine) "Brisk Winter"

We blended low-caffeine green tea with orange peel and snowflake sugar crystals. The brisk mikan flavor and subtle sweetness will help make your new year warm and relaxing!

Our low caffeine green tea contains about one-fourth the caffeine of a cup of standard Japanese green tea.

On New Year’s Day and for several days following, people visit temples or shrines to pray for a peaceful start of the new year. This is called "Hatsumoude "(初诣).

On the morning of January 1st, family members get together and have bowl of "ozouni"(御雑煮)which is Mochi—rice cakes—in a soup broth. As a part of the family gathering, children eagerly anticipate New Year’s gifts of pocket money "Otoshidama"(お年玉) from adults.

Genmaicha (Brown Rice Tea) with Ginger and Pink Peppers "Happy New Year!"

Genmaicha, Brown rice tea, is an ideal tea for happily celebrating the New Year's holidays and beginning of the new year together with friends and family.

We blended Japanese green tea with wholesome, aromatic brown roasted rice and added ginger and colorful pink-peppers. The aroma of ginger and roasted rice reminds Japanese of traditional Japanese rice cookies. You can drink it unsweetened or with sugar or honey.

Like the holidays in Western countries, Japanese Oshougatsu is a happy occasion for togetherness and renewal spent with one’s family. Why Don't you try our Oshougatsu customs to make your Christmas holidays special? Happy Oshougatsu!
